The Key To MLM Success…Hype Or Hunger?

There seems to be a huge dilemma as to what is the key to MLM success.  Is it hype or hunger?

First, what do I even mean by these terms?

When I talk about hype, I’m referring to the emotion driven marketing that seems to catch new marketers day in and day out.  The kind of marketing that seems to get massive amounts of success with every opportunity launch.

On the flip side, hunger is the daily grind kind of marketing; you know setting a routine that can tend to be boring and lack results.

For many new marketers the former would clearly be more appealing.  After all selling is about poking at emotions right? What better way to get a ton of people into a prelaunch opportunity than to tell them that there’s going to be massive spillover from the top leaders and your 10×10 matrix is going to be full in no time right?

Actually…that sounds really good Kevin.  What’s the problem?

Well we have to break this down a little more.  Consider the fact that matrix opportunities are almost impossible to completely fill out.  You are willing to take a gamble that all ten of the people under you are going to have ten people each and so on.  What if the spillover from the top doesn’t reach them? Are they still going to do their part and create their own spillover?  What if people quit?  What if everyone is looking for spillover and nothing else?

Catch my drift?  I’ll give you a story from personal experience.

Once upon a time there was a young man who was hungry to succeed in network marketing.  He wanted to find a mentor who would show him how to reach the top but unfortunately, no one was genuine and only wanted his money.  One day he stumbled upon a guy who promised him tons of spillover in a new matrix opportunity.  This guy said that it was a social network opportunity like Facebook and Myspace except you get paid!  It was only $80/month and the possibility of making almost $200,000/month with a full matrix sure sounded pretty appealing.

Luckily, the young man ran into a genuine mentor who started teaching him how to market.  The young man decided not to join the matrix and started learning the basics of marketing instead.  Three months later, after generating more leads in one week than he ever had before, the young man looked up the social network opportunity and found absolutely nothing in existence. The end.

Now this isn’t a post to bash anyone in matrix opportunities.  The point I’m trying to make is that they are not ideal for network marketing simply because it attracts way too many tire kickers…you know the people just joining for spillover and not do any work themselves.

So that leaves us with hunger…

What are you hungry for? What are you doing in this industry and why? What quality of life are you aiming for?  These are the questions you need to ask yourself.  This is what’s going to get you through the daily routines that can become EXTREMELY boring.  This is what’s going to get you through the times when you make your first call to a lead and they absolutely shut you down.  This is what’s going to get you through the first week of a minimal amount of leads.

So stop buying into the hype of prelaunches…it’s absolutely absurd when people tell you that it’s the hottest new thing and you would be a total moron to miss out on this.  True, there may be a ton of people joining…people who have absolutely no idea how to market, but how long do you think they’re going to stay with that opportunity if they don’t know how to market?  How long do you think it’s going to be until they find the latest and greatest opportunity to say the exact same thing all over again?

What are you going to buy into? Hype or hunger?

Hey Kevin thanks for the post. I have also looked at and even joined a matrix and what you say is true. If you sign up a bunch of people that are all waiting for spill over what do you get, a static matrix. They do not even offer you the choice of a red pill or a blue pill! :)
A matrix, like you said is not all bad, the bottom line is you have to build a business yourself, you can not wait for someone else to do it for you. Get a good mentor/trainer, train yourself, push through the hard times and you will succeed.
Thanks again for the post,
